Should Brands Be Recognizing Holidays?

Unless the holiday is super meaningful to your brand, I don’t think brands need to stress too much on covering holidays.

I would think it’s smart for a jewelry brand to recognize Valentine’s Day. Or a boutique basket store to recognize Easter. Etc. Or a Jewish brand recognizing Hanukkah. Those kinds of things.

But other than that- I don’t think brands should feel obligated to say something to their community on every single holiday.

For one, most of us don’t care. I know for a fact I’m not checking to make sure my local HEB recognized Halloween you know? And if they do a post saying “Happy Halloween” at most like, k cool, next. Now, I might *like* to see my local book store who I know is owned by a Christian couple to say Merry Christmas. (But I also wouldn’t expect it nor punish them if they didn’t.) If it feels like a chore or an obligation or a “does anyone REALLY care” situation.. save your breath. Save 15 min. Don’t post.

I say all this because I’ve had many clients write me before saying their were stressed out bc they missed national women’s day. Or they missed saying happy new years. Or they missed international pancake day. Whatever it is. You get the point. But they are generally ~stressed~ about this. When there are so many other things to ACTUALLY stress over. This shouldn’t warrant stress. Pick what you stress about. This should totally not be one of them.

On the same note I’ve had clients be like, “Hey Katey, I’ve spent like 30 minutes wondering what to say about Easter. I’m lost. Do we say something? Do we not? What’s the verbiage?” I’m like you spent 30 min on this?! And meanwhile you are running a whole azz business? No way! Haha! You know your community would want you focusing on other things. In the grand scheme of things this ONE social media post is not a make or break- and probably barely even a thought to most. Let’s just not do it!

That’s where my mind around the topic of brands recognizing holidays.

BTW. It should go without saying (I hope) but this is just my opinion. I’m certain there are many who disagree and they put up some good arguments too. Would love for you to share them! And to hear who agrees and what you’d add or subtract.
